It’s competition, but not as we know it

The world of charities, voluntary and community organisations is changing faster than ever before. The pressures are now coming from a whole host of sources; delivery of public services, social and economic trends, public opinion, growth in fundraising by schools, universities and even hospitals, economic uncertainties and the ‘feel-bad factor’ all add to the pressure. Moreover, the nature of charities’ work is changing. Gone are the days when the welfare state would meet the basic needs of all. Now charities are part of the basic social service provision, sometimes funded by the State and sometimes not. They must change their approach to meet the demands and changing priorities of grant-providers at the local, national and European levels.
